What is judging...
I hear a lot about judging and that you should not judge people.... but what really is judging? Judging quite simply is speculation. It is coming to a decision without any facts. Here is an example: if you are a parent and your children are crying in their bedroom and you walk in and punish both of them. That is an example of judging- because you judged them - came to a conclusion - without any facts. However- if you questioned your children and find that one hit the other in the head with a ball for no reason and then decided that the child that threw the ball will not watch television for the night.... you judged properly. It was a specific judgement based on facts and not speculation.

Everyone makes judgments. We judge who we want as a friend, who we want to date and who we want to marry. If we make these judgments ignoring the facts- it will lead to a very difficult life. Judging without facts is considered non-Biblical judging.

You see most people get the quote about judging from the Bible wrong- they only know the first sentence...

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. Matthew 7: 1

Please take note of the second sentence...

"For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7: 1-2

As a result - you must make judgments based on facts and not speculation... because isn't that how you would want to be judged?

If you are on the jury of a murder trial and part of the evidence consists of a video of the defendant shooting someone. You can make the judgment that the defendant is guilty based on those facts. If I murdered someone- I would want to be judged by evidence (facts) and not be judged guilty by speculation such as just the way I looked...

If you learn that your next door neighbor had been been convicted and spent time in prison for dealing drugs, assault and murder- you could make the judgment that you do not want to let this neighbor into your life or near your family. You would be making a judgment based upon specific facts...

However- most importantly- no one but God can judge someone's ultimate salvation. You are not God and therefore - cannot know the entire facts of someone's life- even that of a murderer. Unlike specific circumstances- such as who you want as a friend or to date- your salvation is based on the facts and works of your entire life and only God can know those facts.

Make judgments based on the facts, the truth and how you would want to be judged - that is judging Biblically.

Biblical judgment - making judgments based on facts- equals righteous judgment...
